Spotify’s MOM Finale Turns Up the Heat in KwaMashu with Gqom Royalty and Township Vibes

Spotify’s six-week cultural takeover, Mother of Music (MOM), wrapped up with a full-circle celebration in KwaMashu this past weekend — and the streets are still buzzing.

After weeks of high-energy campus activations, streetwear drops, and sonic storytelling through Durban’s rich musical identity, MOM closed out with iBirthday ka Gobela, a fire Gqom-focused bash honouring one of the genre’s hometown heroes, Mzamo Mgilane.

Taking over London on 75 in the heart of KwaMashu, the event was a vibrant salute to community, culture, and raw local talent. With over 2,000 groovers showing up to party, it was clear — Gqom isn’t just music; it’s the moment.

Mzamo, a beloved dance influencer and the brain behind Mgilane Hair Studio, was the man of the hour. Arriving in a branded taxi blasting heavy bass and escorted by traditional Umqhumo dancers, his entrance set the tone. “Spotify has shown me love just like a mom would,” he shared on stage. “There is no home without a mother. I needed MOM.”

The crowd was kept on its feet with a lit local line-up including GQOMKIID, NTOKZEEN DA ONE, and DaSoulBoyz. But it was MC Reneiloe Seemane aka The Whistler Girl who stole the stage energy — her signature whistle moves and charisma had the whole room on boil. iStove besiku 6!

According to Spotify data, Gqom is in its prime. Local streams have surged by 105% year-on-year, proving what Durbanites have known all along: iGqom iyavutha! (Gqom is flaming hot!)

MOM is more than a city tour; it’s a tribute to the heartbeat of South African youth,” said Bea Theron, Spotify Sub-Saharan Africa’s Experiential Marketing Manager. “From the first beat to the final whistle, Durban brought the fire.”

With MOM’s final notes echoing through the townships, one thing is clear: Durban’s youth are not waiting to be discovered — they’re leading the rhythm. And MOM just turned up the volume.
