SAMA31 Unveils Hybrid Awards Show as South Africa’s Biggest Music Night Enters a New Era

South Africa’s premier music ceremony is stepping into a bold new chapter. The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) has confirmed that the 31st South African Music Awards (SAMA31) will take place on 14 December 2025, but this year, the country’s most anticipated music event is transforming into a fully hybrid experience — combining digital innovation with a reimagined live showcase.

Hybrid Format Marks Strategic Shift Amid Funding Pressures

After months of industry-wide challenges, including reduced sponsorship and funding constraints, RiSA has opted to pivot away from the traditional large-scale gala format. Instead, SAMA31 will embrace a streamlined, digitally amplified model designed to reach more viewers, enhance fan participation, and adapt to shifting audience behaviour.

RiSA says the move is not a downgrade, but an evolution.

“Some may see it as a shift from tradition, but we see it as progress,” says Unati Gwija, SAMA Spokesperson. “The hybrid edition allows us to widen access, deepen engagement, and bring the SAMAs closer to fans across South Africa and the world.”

Prestige Remains Intact as SAMAs Focus on Accessibility and Innovation

Despite the format change, RiSA maintains that the credibility of the awards remains unchanged. All judging and auditing processes continue under strict independent oversight, preserving the SAMAs’ long-standing reputation as the highest honour in South African music.

The hybrid model brings new possibilities, including multi-platform storytelling, interactive fan zones, behind-the-scenes content, and global livestreamed performances. It also opens doors for new sponsorship models and international collaborations, strengthening the awards’ sustainability for future generations.

A Strong Network of Partners Continues to Back the SAMAs

SAMA31 will be supported by a powerhouse lineup of partners including the Motsepe Foundation, Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, DSAC, SAMPRA, SAMRO, CAPASSO, YouTube, and media partner SABC.

Together, they ensure the SAMAs remain South Africa’s gold standard in celebrating artistry, diversity, cultural impact, and excellence.

A format may change, but legacy doesn’t. SAMA31 proves that South African music will always find new stages, new platforms, and new ways to be heard.
