Township talent shines on the big stage
Two young footballers from Tembisa are set to take their dreams beyond South Africa after being selected for an international football experience through the Lay’s RePlay programme.
The announcement came during the finals of the Tembisa RePlay World Cup League, held at the Safe-Hub Tembisa, where months of competition culminated in an emotional and high-energy showdown.
A journey built on discipline and resilience
15-year-old Themba and 14-year-old Omolemo were chosen for the opportunity, recognised not only for their performance on the pitch but also for their commitment and growth since joining the programme in 2021.

Themba, an emerging goalkeeper, has been honing his skills with a clear goal of playing professional football, while Omolemo has stood out for her leadership, balancing school commitments with her role as a motivating force among her teammates.
According to coach Thulani Ngwenya, both players represent the resilience often required to succeed. He noted that despite the challenges that come with growing up in township environments, the two athletes have remained focused and determined.
A league rooted in community impact
The Tembisa RePlay League, hosted through Safe-Hub, ran from early February to March and brought together 28 teams and around 160 young participants. Over 100 hours of football were played, creating a platform for development, teamwork and community building.
Safe-Hub Tembisa has become a central space for young people in the area, offering not just sports programmes but a structured environment that promotes inclusion and personal growth.
A proud moment for South African football
The finals reached a powerful peak when South African football legend Lucas Radebe made a special appearance to announce the selected players and award medals and the tournament trophy.

Radebe praised the young athletes for their determination, highlighting how platforms like Lay’s RePlay create opportunities for talent to be recognised beyond local communities.
More than just a trip
For Themba and Omolemo, the upcoming international experience represents more than travel – it is a chance to witness top-level football and gain exposure to the global game.
The initiative, led by Lay’s through its RePlay programme, focuses on creating access and opportunity for young players, particularly those from under-resourced communities.
With Safe-Hub Tembisa continuing to serve as a foundation for development, stories like these reflect how grassroots programmes can turn potential into real opportunities.
