If there’s one thing South Africans love more than seafood… it’s a good deal. And Ocean Basket knew exactly how to reel us in.
To celebrate 30 years of doing the most with hake, lemon wedges and that garlic sauce we secretly want to drink, Ocean Basket threw an intimate birthday bash recently – and yes, I scored an invite (lucky me!).
Picture this: a cozy setting, fish flying out the kitchen, wine glasses clinking, and a cake that had people shamelessly angling for second slices. The vibe? Casual glam. Think linen shirts, seafood platters, and that unmistakable smell of crispy chips and celebration.
They didn’t just throw a party though. On the actual birthday – 16 July – they rolled out a nationwide R30 special for their famous fish and chips. Yep, THIRTY bucks for a full portion. In 2025. That’s practically time travel. You’d swear it was a Black Friday seafood miracle the way people lined up.
Back to the party – it was clear Ocean Basket isn’t just a restaurant chain; it’s a whole mood. From humble beginnings in Pretoria to having branches in Mauritius, the UAE and beyond, they’ve kept it lekker and local. And that spirit was everywhere at the event – right down to the birthday cake (which, by the way, was shaped like a fish. We love commitment).
Thirty years in, and they’re still serving hot, still spicy, still generous – just like your favourite auntie with a platter full of prawns.

The Scene Feed Verdict?
An event that smelled like success, looked like a food coma, and tasted like nostalgia. Happy 30th, Ocean Basket – and thanks for reminding us that some things should stay the same.
